Going to Japan on a scholarship was to have been Bianca’s act of rebellion against her rich parents and revenge against her radical boyfriend, but she finds herself ill-prepared for independence, and for Tokyo’s winters. She resents  the other Filipino students who follow President Estrada’s impeachment trial even as she tries to keep from freezing, and sees in old Professor Dizon, with his tired, cynical eyes, her only ally. But she comes to realize that there are things more surprising than her own capacity for survival.
